How to Store Compressed Gas Cylinders

time2011/04/22

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has published an extended list of rules and suggestions for storing all types of compressed gas cylinders. However, many of these rules cover exotic gasses that the average homeowner is not concerned with. Nevertheless, every member of the household should be aware of safety issues and storage requirements for common gasses used in the home workshop. These often include gasses such as oxygen, acetylene,

1 Store all gas cylinders upright and away from direct sunlight. Secure heavy oxygen and acetylene cylinders to the wall or onto their wheeled trolley with an insulated chain or a sturdy strap fitted with buckles. Store smaller cylinders out of reach of children.

2 Stand liquefied flammable gas cylinders upright with their pressure-relief valves visible and unrestricted. These cylinders are not completely filled with liquid. This allows space for expansion if the cylinders become heated and the liquid transitions to the gas phase. When the internal pressure exceeds a certain point, the pressure relief valve vents the gasses to atmosphere. Flammable gas containers are designed to vent gasses from time to time under normal storage conditions.

3 Never attempt to remove or tamper with pressure-relief valves. Keep the vent orifice free of restrictions and do not try to plug the valve when you become aware of a cylinder venting gasses.
